14 contemporary textile artists exhibit their work in the Chapelle Notre-Dame de l'Île-Barbe - Lyon 9

Echoing the Lyon Biennial of Contemporary Art's theme of relationships with others, we wanted to give pride of place to textiles, because we believe they are the ideal place for encounters, for the transmission of individual and collective memories. As a protective envelope, fabric is one of the many channels through which the intensity of family ties is materialized, as well as the friction of social hierarchies and the strangeness of cultures. As a medium of exchange, fabrics were among the first goods to travel the world, and Lyon was one of the centers of this first opening to the world. Situated on the Saône, a place of pilgrimage in the past and a meeting place today, Ile Barbe is the perfect embodiment of this dynamic of exchange and welcome. In this setting, we are 14 textile artists, 14 women of different generations, and we wanted to present a hyphen between different practices that have in common to take side roads, calling into question the hierarchies between art and craft. Our aim is to make this exhibition a meeting point, a meeting between tradition and plastic invention, a meeting with the public, but also a time for exchange on this practice still too often perceived as marginal.

Special opening for the European Heritage Days: Saturday 21/09 10am to 6pm - Sunday 22/09 10am to 5pm
