Rimbaud's portrait is a worldwide icon, but its creator Etienne Carjat (1828-1906) is less well known. An exhibition in his native Fareins pays tribute to him and to his cartoonist and photographer friends. They paved the way for today's portraitists.

Etienne Carjat is the tutelary shadow of this initial exhibition on the art of portrait, past and present. The exhibition highlights his work and that of his many artist friends, including Gill, Grandville, Nadar, Alfred Le Petit and Daumier, as well as that of Lyonnais cartoonist Charles Philipon, whose political impertinence was inseparable from his graphic creativity. As a counterpoint, recent photographic research is presented around the notion of the "disfigured/refigured" portrait, with an evocation of Weegee's photographic caricatures, the Walter Bondy photographic collection re-photographed by Jacqueline Salmon, and works by Yves Trémorin, Jean-Louis Garnell and Catherine Poncin. « In this way, historical and contemporary works are placed in perspective, like so many questions on the notion of the portrait and proposals on the plasticity of the human face ». Jacqueline Salmon and Jean Christian Fleury, exhibition curators. Open to the public free of charge on weekends from 2pm to 7pm until October 13. Mediation by art history students from Lyon II University and publication of an illustrated catalog. Groups (children and adults) and accompanied school groups welcome on weekdays until October 18, subject to prior registration: contact@artfareins.com
