Venue

These 20 paintings – bible-story treatments, portraits, still lifes and landscapes – come from the collection of the museum of Lyon’s hospitals trust, established in 1936 at the Hôtel-Dieu and closed to the public since 2010. The canvases, produced during various eras and exposed to the test of time, now show cracks and chips in their paint. Pieces of Japan paper, like bandages, cover the paintings to prevent their deterioration – a symbolic reminder of the care dispensed by the institution. Thus do these paintings echo a history defined by fragility and strength.
