Moving between autobiography and fiction, Salman Toor’s figurative paintings depict intimate and everyday moments in the lives of young, queer men in urban settings in the United States and South Asia. While often humorous and playful, his narratives touch on the emotional costs of colonialism and the idea of freedom through immigration. Toor considers fragility to be “like a state of constant negotiation between places, perceptions, and the ideas of inclusion and exclusion.” Through his vulnerable figures and often marginalized bodies, the artist reveals a deeply engaging existence that elicits empathy.
