Mohamad Abdouni’s photographs are embedded in his repeated attempts at retrieving a collective memory that has been lost along the way, or in his efforts to make sense of the persisting impact of deliberate battles with personal recollections. I Feel Only Fear, his photographic installation for the 16th Lyon Biennale proposes a sensory, emotional and physical experience. In line with his artistic practice, the work functions as an open-ended archive of queer and trans Arab identities. It is rooted in both the artist’s persistent retracing of blurred memories, as well as in an undertaking begun several years ago, to capture multiple stories of resilience, fragility and vitality that are related to LGBTQIA+ generations in the SWANA (South West Asia and North Africa) region.
