Merce Cunningham aurait eu 100 ans en 2019. Sous la houlette de Robert Swinston, le Centre National de Danse Contemporaine (CNDC) d’Angers continue de faire redécouvrir son répertoire. C’est avec cette pièce mythique que la Biennale ouvre la saison de ce centenaire.
Robert Swinston, formerly Cunningham’s assistant and now artistic director at the CNDC in Angers, presents two essential Merce pieces. In Beach Birds (music: John Cage), 11 dancers in black and white swarm on stage: sudden take-offs, moments of calm, and individual phrasing to the fore. BIPED (1999) features motion capture and two digital artists. The choreography, aided by the DanceForms software, echoes Gavin Bryars’ halfrecorded, half-acoustic music. A tribute to the insatiable curiosity of a monstre sacré.
