Born in Accra, Ghana, in 1957, artist and filmmaker John Akomfrah lives and works in London. His work deals with memory, postcolonialism, temporality and aesthetics, and explores the experiences of migrant diasporas around the world. In 1982, Akomfrah co-founded the influential Black Audio Film Collective in London alongside artists David Lawson and Lina Gopaul, with whom he continues to collaborate. The artist will represent the UK at the Venice Biennale of Contemporary Art 2024.
