"Be careful and do not give into any flirting for the moment "

Upon invitation of monopôle, the curator Mathilde Belouali organizes an exhibition that will bring together the artists Romain Grateau, Youri Johnson and Melody Lu.

Each year, monopôle gives carte blanche to a curator for the exhibition in September. It is within the framework of this invitation that we propose in resonance with the Biennale de Lyon, the project of carte blanche to the curator Mathilde Belouali.

For this exhibition, Mathilde Belouali invites three artists who leave objects of their daily life to incorporate and transform them through sculpture. The practices of Romain Grateau, Youri Johnson and Melody Lu overcome the limits of the materials and know-how used, whether cement, metal or stone, with a game and an address that come from their learning of solo techniques, by DIY and tutorial, intuition before training. Their works appeal to funerary, ritual and ancient statuary, and the implicit codes that make us community. They interact here with a selection of archives from the Fonds Michel Chomarat, held at the Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon. This collection includes hundreds of documents, books, engravings and illustrations, belonging to stories of marginal social groups, in touch with Lyon’s history: sexual and gender minorities, esotericism and occultism, popular, street and oral culture, social movements.
